Herbert Percy Horne (1864-1916) was an English architect, art historian, antiquarian, designer, poet and typographer. In c.1884 he designed The Angel with the Trumpet furnishing fabric. As a block print it was the only one he created for the Century Guild, made by Simpson and Godlee a textile printing company.
Arts and Crafts textiles made use of figures as well as floral motifs, animals and birds. Horne’s original print, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, had a solitary angel holding aloft a long trumpet. Inspired by this design, Nicola’s angels appear as a pair facing each other, both blowing their golden trumpets. Behind their heads their two-tone halos shine. Their white tunics are simple and are adorned only with a vertical fine black band interspersed with green, white and red squares and rectangles. A classic stylised red rose adds a flash of colour as the trumpets herald in the Christmas season.
